概要 / Abstract:
This talk challenges the persistent binary between quantitative and qualitative methods in digital platform research, arguing that the study of platformed media requires an interdisciplinary reorientation grounded in cultural analysis. Drawing on my work developing the ACSMC (Algorithmically Curated Sequential Media Consumption) framework, I explore how the “timeline” – a sequential media consumption architecture exemplified by platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube – is simultaneously a site of economic extraction, cultural meaning-making, and neurological engagement. While quantitative approaches remain vital, their normative dominance often obscures the lived, affective, and symbolic dimensions of timeline media. I propose a return to interpretative methods and interdisciplinary analysis as a way to recalibrate our methodological toolkit in light of the structural opacity of platform data, the symbolic texture of digital content, and the embodied rhythms of platform use. This disciplinary and methodological pluralism invites researchers to treat the digital not only as a statistical object or fixed circuit but as a dynamic cultural and political artefact, whose complexities exceed the remit of any single disciplinary lens.
